Today in The Bridge we marked Holocaust Memorial Day 2018 with a special assembly.
We invited Richard Spencer, Holocaust Educator, to lead the assembly and he showed us the "power of words" with a short scenario and some very powerful slides.
Staff and pupils were split into two groups and one group was treated with chairs, pens, papers, sweets and kind words, the other group were treated differently because there were rumours about them, they looked a bit different and it was felt best they were marked with a yellow badge and kept away from everyone else. Richard then extended this to story of the extermination of the Jewish population of Europe during the second World War.
Pupils and staff were very moved, posters around the Bridge have encouraged pupils to reflect on modern Genocide also.
The final message was, words are powerful weapons and we are all responsible for how we use them, the change starts with us.
Safer Internet Day 2018 is 6th February and we held an assembly yesterday and launched our competitions!
KS2 and 3 can design a poster with the theme "Create, connect and share respect"
KS4 can write a 280 character tweet on the theme, including a picture, drawing, poem or song.
The closing date is 9th February - get desiging and writing!
There are also form time activities going on using the Safer Internet Resources, for all age groups.
The posters are up and the service is now live!
Text and Tell was launched during Anti-Bullying week and KS3 designed this name and the logo for the posters which are now all over the Bridge.
Pupils generally feel safe and happy in the Bridge:
94% of pupils feel safe here,
80% of pupils agreeing pupils behave well here,
90% of pupils agreeing that if bullying or harassment occurs staff deal with it.
(from KS3 and 4 Pupil Survey Autumn term)
However, from time to time everyone needs someone to "talk" to or to share a worry with, either about themselves or a friend. Pupils can text the hotline in confidence and a senior member of staff will respond appropriately, also in confidence.
We also have a worry box on the corridor and all staff are available to support pupils during the day, especially at break and lunchtimes.
The names of the provisions within the Bridge have been updated to reflect the purpose and age ranges of the groups.
This has also been shared via the December newsletter:
Its great to be back and the first week is over already!
Room Moves
There have been some changes in The Bridge, everyone is used to them already and seeing the benefits! The Art room has moved to the old B2P base room, we now have designated space for each aspect of this subject, including large 3-d projects, Batik printing, clay work and many other media, in a large and safe space.
Our Family Engagement Officer Tammy is now based in the Wellbeing Room and has quiet space to work with both parents and either groups or individual pupils.
Izzy, our visiting drama therapist will now be based in the old KS3 classroom and share this space with intervention staff and our new library area. Each year, Welsh Government gives schools grant funding to improve levels of literacy and close the gap in pupil achievement caused by poverty. We will be using this to fund the purchase of new shelving and suites of both fiction and non fiction books. We'll share photos as soon as the work is finished.
Mary Morriss who was based in the KS3 room, is now based in the old Art room and will teach her vocational subjects from here.
We would like to thank our excellent premises staff, Jan, Sian, Chris and Sue for their work in helping us move furniture, clean carpets and re-paint the walls. Maintaining an attractive, fit for purpose and clean environment is important to both the learners and staff and we set the example in taking care of our fantastic premises.
We won't be moving any more rooms any time soon!
